Give this free tool a try if you’re looking to add some creativity to your recordings. Snagit is created by the same company as Camtasia, which is called TechSmith.

It’s not as much a Camtasia alternative as a very slimmed-down version of Camtasia. Not a bad return on a $50 product.It’s an easy-to-use and reliable platform for capturing screenshots and recording video and audio files.

I took a 30 minute ($1800) meeting and turned it into a 9 minute movie which saved the company $900. Some sent me questions, so let's say that was 6 minutes of their time. Instead, I recorded a video which took everyone 9 minutes to watch. I was looking at 20 people x 30 minutes x $3/minute. some of them were probably closer to $180. Now most of these people make more than $60k/year. I was inviting the execs, plus our product leaders and some folks from marketing. I summarized my findings in a presentation and began setting up the meeting in outlook. Case in point: I had been asked by our executive team to report back on some findings from an event. Moreoever, if I can use Snagit to record something that otherwise would have required a meeting, I can save my company a ton of money. Saving $50 by not buying Snagit, only so you can waste 4 hours a year (or more) of your time using free, but insufficient, tools, seems like a short-sided trade off. Its free, but walking 60 miles a day would be ridiculous. So, if Snipping tool is wasting even 1 minute of my time a day (over what it would take to do the same in Snagit), then the snipping tool is costing the company approximately $200. They *could* do it using snipping tool and Paint, but it took way too many tries and wasted time.įWIW, if someone makes $60k a year, that means that the company is paying $1 per minute of your time (when you include in all the benefits, insurance, etc). They spoke about the difficulties they had making a screenshot that was good enough to go into their documents or presentations. I've spoken with a couple dozen Snagit customers this week that had previously used the snipping tool.
